Khalid Mahmood aged 39, became Britain's second Muslim MP when he won Birmingham Perry Barr in June 2001, with a majority of more than 8,000 in one of the most ethnically diverse areas of the city.
Before entering Parliament, he was studying towards an MBA in Management Studies. Like most mature students, he went back to study to improve his career. A development manager at South Birmingham College, his department enrolled him on the MBA course last year to improve his skills and learning in the field.
MP for Birmingham Perry Bar since June 2001. City Councillor and Chair of Race Relations (1990 - 1993). He has held a variety of posts in local party, including Secretary and Vice Chair.

He has been passionate about politics all his life; he has been a member of the Labour party since 1982 and was a councillor on Birmingham City Council from 1990 to 1993.
